ACADEMY OF CREATIVITY

The ACADEMY OF CREATIVITY : ART FOR EDUCATION project was launched in January 2016 in the Walmer township, in Port Elizabeth.

As a result of IMBEWU's interest in applying its expertise in the domain of alternative education, this project prioritises a holistic approach and the personal development of the children and teenagers by relying on a new interactive channel to which the children can relate – artistic activities. This tool targets a different category of the youth bearing in mind differences in abilities and preferences.

Music, visual arts and drama make up the main activities of the project. Art as an educational tool is a central feature of the project as the children also benefit from learning support and life skills sessions after normal school classes.

BENEFICIARIES

OBJECTIVE FOR 2018

100 12-year old students from the Walmer Primary School.
200 children and young people between 10 and 18 years from the Walmer township.
2 local facilitators and 1 teacher from the Walmer Primary School will receive continuous training in life-skills.

ACTIVITIES

Artistic activities (music, visual arts and drama) divided into 2 categories :

Juniors programme: aims to expose children between 10 and 13 years of age to the world of art giving them the chance to develop their self-awareness , to express themselves, to increase their self-esteem thereby developing their creative capacities and their self-confidence..
Seniors programme for adolescents between 14 and 18 years with a passion for art.

Education :

Twice-weekly Homework Club and tutoring to improve their academic skills.
Life skills sessions, transmitted through the medium of art, to instil values such as self-confidence, perseverance and ambition with the aim of reducing risk behaviours in an environment where crime, violence and disease are prevalent.

TRAINING

Two facilitators and a teacher from the Walmer Primary School will receive complementary and regular training in life-skills thereby developing concrete know-how in the area of holistic education.
